I am an artist using natural and found materials, which I collect on daily walks in the ancient woodland near my home in Derbyshire. I gather the materials that catch my eye such as thorns, bark, seeds, feathers and acorn cups. These materials are often overlooked, trodden on and discarded despite the wealth of colour, pattern and texture they offer. The irregularities, tiny imperfections and random twists and turns make each item unique.
These ‘natural treasures’ are then hand-stitched, tied, woven and intricately assembled into vessels, sculptures and collage in my Derbyshire studio.
I graduated from the University of Derby on the Crafts BA course in 2011, with first class honours and received the University Purchase Award. I now exhibit my work in galleries, craft events and exhibitions and have work available for sale or to order as a commission.
I gain great inspiration from visual culture, museums and collections, regularly spending my days at wonderful places such as the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford; the Yorkshire Sculpture Park; Stoneywell NT in Leicestershire; Compton Verney, Warwickshire; Kettles Yard, Cambridge and the British Museum, London.
